Student Testimonies
Fall Semester 2008

I liked the interaction in the class. It is the hardest for me,
but I was forced to practice and did much better than I
thought that I could.

It seems like in this 10 week session we covered less
material from the book, though I really enjoy the short
stories and books. Perhaps instead of reading one entire
session we could split the time to half reading and half
continuing with grammar. Perhaps it is just me, but I feel
like I really need to keep pressing forward (and repeating)
the mechanics of the language. I also enjoy the provide.

The thing I liked the most about the course is when we are
asked about our week - it gives us a good opportunity to
express ourselves in German and also to learn new
vocabulary that is relevant to the things in our lives.

[Comment on what needs to be improved]: I really don't
know how to answer this. For me personally, the grammar
was repetitious, but that was not the fault of the instructor - I
had studied some German before I took the course. Believe
me I am not an expert on German grammar, and there are
things I would have liked to have gotten better acquainted
with - the passive voice and the subjunction and conditional
moods. But I realize that these are things to be covered in
more advanced courses, so again it really isn't a criticism.
The material covered in the course was accurately
represented at the start of the class. The highlight of the
class was the teacher, her enthusiasm, and her amazing
ability to engage the class.

The depth of knowledge on the part of the teacher in the
German language and the English language enriched the
content of the course.

I like the comfortable environment. We are challenged to
participate, but not too intimidated!

I always have a good time and learn so much once I am
there. I feel like I could go back to Germany and at least
function and get through many situations. I must admit I
feel overwhelmed sometimes in class, completely lost
when you talk a lot in German. But I realize this is a
problem with me, not you. But it does play into my thoughts
of continuing. Also I really like the group of women that are
in this class.

I actually did recommend this program to other people!
When word gets out about this, there will be waiting lists
and packed classes! It is wonderful to come and just enjoy
learning for the sake of learning, to laugh and compete
with newfound friends, and have an evening to yourself
where your only task is to learn.

Going until 9:00 is hard on me. It is pretty late. Thank
goodness it is only one time a week. If there is an
alternative that would be nice.

More answers will be posted as they become available

1 When we read the German text in class, z.b.
Kommissar structure to emphasize the uses of articles
in the nominative, accusative and dative forms ... still!!

2 I can't think how it could be improved.

3 The text book supplements conversation, but I'd like to
have one with a bit more grammar explaination and
drills. More essay writing assignments would also be
useful.

4 Although not as interesting, a little more time needs to
be spent on grammar

5 review of verbs and verb conjugation would be helpful.
Review of sein and werden.
